When the map window in the lower corner of the DJI GO or DJI GO 4 app remains blank, displays a grey grid, or refuses to load satellite imagery, the app is failing to retrieve map data from its online map provider. Because the drone’s radio connection does not provide internet access, your mobile device must download map tiles over a cellular data connection or load them from a previously saved offline cache.
Fast Fix
Turn off your phone’s Wi-Fi if it is connected to a drone or controller network, allowing the app to download live map tiles over cellular data. If you are flying in an area without cell service, connect your phone to home Wi-Fi before your trip, open the map screen in DJI GO 4, and zoom into your flight area to pre-cache the imagery.
Understanding Why Maps Disappear
The drone does not transmit map graphics or satellite imagery to your phone. The aircraft only broadcasts raw GPS telemetry—its current latitude, longitude, altitude, and heading.
The DJI GO / GO 4 app takes those raw numeric coordinates and plots them as an icon on top of a digital map layer provided by third-party services (such as Mapbox, Google Maps, or Here Technologies, depending on your device operating system and geographical region).
If the app cannot reach those map servers, or if it lacks local storage permissions to write the image files to your phone’s memory, the telemetry arrow will float over a blank, grey, or black grid.
For issues relating to the newer DJI Fly mapping interface, compare this behavior with DJI Fly App Map Not Loading.

Step-by-Step Fixes
1. Break the Drone Wi-Fi Connection Trap
If you control models like the DJI Spark, original Mavic Air, or Mavic Pro directly using your phone’s Wi-Fi instead of a physical remote:
- Your mobile device connects to the drone’s internal Wi-Fi broadcast.
- Both Android and iOS will assume this Wi-Fi connection provides internet access, cutting off cellular data requests.
- Because the drone has no gateway to the broader internet, map requests time out.
- The Fix (Android): Enable Mobile Data Always Active in Developer Options, or tap “Use mobile network for data” when the operating system warns that the drone Wi-Fi has no internet.
- The Fix (iOS): Toggle Wi-Fi Assist to ON under Settings > Cellular, allowing the iPhone to automatically route web traffic through cellular data when connected to non-internet Wi-Fi networks.
2. Verify Precise Location Permissions
If the map loads global continental outlines but never zooms into your local field—or shows your home point located off the coast of Africa at coordinate (0,0):
- iOS: Go to Settings > Privacy & Security > Location Services > DJI GO 4. Ensure access is set to While Using the App and toggle Precise Location to ON.
- Android: Go to Settings > Apps > DJI GO 4 > Permissions > Location. Select Allow only while using the app and enable Use precise location.
- If your device continues reporting location errors, consult Drone App GPS Location Not Available or Mobile Device GPS Error.
3. How to Pre-Cache Maps for Offline Use
When flying in remote areas, state parks, or locations with poor cellular service, you must cache your flight area ahead of time:
- Connect your phone or tablet to your home or office Wi-Fi network before leaving for the field. You do not need to power on the drone.
- Launch the DJI GO 4 app and enter the camera view (or tap the map icon on the home screen).
- Tap the map box in the lower-left corner to open the map in full-screen mode.
- Drag the map over to your intended flight location.
- Manually zoom in through several magnification steps across your planned flight area, toggling between Standard Map and Satellite View.
- Every tile viewed while connected to high-speed internet is automatically written to your device’s local cache. When you arrive at the field, the app will read the tiles directly from local storage.
4. Clear Corrupted Map and Application Cache
If map tiles refuse to update even on high-speed internet, the application’s local tile database has likely corrupted.
- Open DJI GO 4 and tap the Me / Profile tab in the lower-right corner.
- Tap the Settings Gear in the top-right corner.
- Tap Clear Cache, and specifically select Clear Map Data.
- Restart the app. If the app continues throwing storage or write errors, follow our repair guide for DJI GO / GO 4 App Storage & Activation Error.
Operational Dangers of Flying Without Maps
Never treat a missing map screen as a minor inconvenience. Flying without an active map introduces critical operational risks:
- Unverified Home Point: Without a satellite overlay, you cannot visually confirm where the aircraft set its Home Point. If compass interference caused the Home Point to be recorded 100 feet away into a tree line, you will not see the error until Return-to-Home triggers. Always cross-check your coordinates using DJI Home Point Not Updated or Recorded Troubleshooting.
- Loss of Orientation Beyond Line of Sight: If you lose visual line of sight due to sun glare or distance, the map provides essential situational awareness regarding terrain, bodies of water, and nearby obstacles.
- Account Disconnect Warnings: If your map is failing because the application has lost internet access entirely, your login session may expire, restricting your flight distance and altitude ceilings. If you encounter account problems, review DJI GO / GO 4 App Login Failed.
