DJI Fly App Map Not Loading

When the map display in the lower corner of the DJI Fly app appears blank, shows a grey checkered grid, or fails to render satellite imagery, the app cannot download the necessary map tiles. Because the drone’s remote controller does not provide an active internet connection, your mobile device or smart controller must pull map data over cellular data, a local Wi-Fi network, or rely on previously saved offline map data.

Fast Fix

Disconnect from any offline Wi-Fi source so your phone can use cellular data. Before leaving home or entering an area without cellular reception, open the DJI Fly app, tap the map view, navigate to your planned flight zone, and zoom in to cache the street and satellite tiles directly into device memory.

What Causes the Map to Fail

The DJI Fly map window does not receive map data from the drone or its satellite connection. The aircraft’s Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) receiver only transmits raw geographic coordinates (latitude and longitude).

Your mobile device or smart controller is responsible for taking those coordinates and rendering them on top of a mapping interface (such as Mapbox, Google Maps, or Apple Maps, depending on your operating system and region). If the app cannot communicate with map servers, or if it lacks local storage permissions, the map area remains completely blank even while the drone itself has a full satellite lock.

1. The Drone Wi-Fi Lockout

If you recently connected your smartphone to the aircraft using QuickTransfer mode or direct Wi-Fi linking, your phone may remain tethered to the drone’s local wireless broadcast.

  • Because the drone’s broadcast provides no internet routing, your operating system will wait indefinitely for responses from map servers that cannot be reached.
  • The Solution: Open your phone’s Wi-Fi settings, disconnect from the aircraft’s broadcast, and return to standard cellular data or your primary local network.

2. Smart Controller Hotspot Requirements

Controllers with integrated displays (such as the DJI RC, DJI RC 2, or DJI RC Pro) do not contain cellular SIM slots.

  • These units cannot load new map areas in the field unless tethered to a smartphone personal hotspot or connected to field Wi-Fi.
  • If you fly in remote locations with a smart controller, you must manually download offline maps while connected to home Wi-Fi before heading out.

3. Application Permissions and Private DNS

Modern mobile operating systems isolate network and storage permissions per application.

  • Location Services: On iOS, ensure Location Services are set to While Using the App and that Precise Location is toggled ON. On Android, verify location permissions are granted. Without local device location, the map will default to a neutral ocean coordinate (0°N, 0°E). For troubleshooting mobile position issues, see Drone App GPS Location Not Available or Mobile Device GPS Error.
  • Cellular Data Access (iOS): Go to Settings > Cellular and scroll down to confirm that the toggle next to DJI Fly is green.
  • Private DNS Filters: If you use an ad-blocking Private DNS service (like NextDNS or AdGuard), it may block requests to Mapbox or foreign CDN servers. Switch your DNS setting to Automatic.

Step-by-Step Fixes

Method A: How to Pre-Cache Maps for Offline Use

Pre-caching is the standard workflow for commercial and recreational pilots flying in areas with weak or nonexistent cellular coverage.

  1. Power on your controller and phone (or smart controller) at home while connected to your home Wi-Fi. You do not need to turn on the drone.
  2. Open the DJI Fly app.
  3. Tap the map box in the bottom-left corner to expand it to full screen.
  4. Drag the map over to your intended flight location.
  5. Switch between Standard and Satellite views in the map layer menu.
  6. Zoom in through various magnification levels across your entire planned flight area. Every tile viewed while connected to Wi-Fi is saved automatically to the local app cache.
  7. Close the app. When you arrive in the field, the cached tiles will render without any active network connection.

Method B: Clear Corrupted Map Cache

If map tiles refuse to update even on high-speed internet, the local cache database may be corrupted.

  1. Open DJI Fly and tap Profile > Settings.
  2. Scroll to the Clear Cache section.
  3. Tap Clear next to Map Data (or Cache).
  4. Force-close the application, restart your device, and relaunch the app on a known stable network connection.
  5. If the app continues throwing storage or data errors, refer to DJI Fly App Storage & Cache Error.

Operational Risks of Flying Without a Map

While a missing map display will not prevent the aircraft’s motors from spinning, flying without a visual map carries specific risks:

  • Blind Return-to-Home (RTH): You will be unable to visually confirm the recorded Home Point on satellite imagery before launch. If the Home Point drifts due to poor initial lock, you will not spot the error on your screen. Verify your coordinates using DJI Home Point Not Updated or Recorded Troubleshooting.
  • Lost Visual Line of Sight (VLOS): If you lose sight of the aircraft, the attitude radar alone provides orientation, but the map shows terrain, nearby bodies of water, and physical obstacles that aid manual recovery.
  • Account-Level Lockouts: If your map is missing because the entire app is unable to reach the network, you may face account restrictions. Verify your connection status with DJI Fly App Login & Network Error.
