Autel Error Code 102020 indicates that the aircraft’s primary or secondary Inertial Measurement Unit (IMU) failed its internal self-test or could not establish baseline zero-biases during power-on. When this happens, the flight controller cannot determine the drone’s attitude, tilt, or acceleration, locking the motors and preventing takeoff. To resolve it, place the drone on a completely stationary, level surface, power cycle the aircraft without touching it, and allow the sensors to initialize before moving the drone.
Fast Fix
Power down the aircraft. Place it on a rigid, perfectly flat, vibration-free surface away from wind and machinery. Turn the drone back on and do not touch, bump, or move the airframe while the boot chimes sound and the gimbal completes its self-test.
Quick Safety Snapshot
- Severity: Critical (takeoff is prevented by flight controller safety logic)
- Safe to Fly: No
- Primary Cause: Aircraft moved or vibrated during power-on, extreme ambient temperature disparity (thermal drift), or internal sensor shock
- Immediate Action: Keep the drone stationary. Do not pick up or handle the aircraft until all initialization LEDs turn solid.
What Error 102020 Means
The Inertial Measurement Unit (IMU) consists of microscopic micro-electromechanical systems (MEMS), including 3-axis gyroscopes and 3-axis accelerometers. Every time an Autel drone boots up, the flight controller samples these sensors thousands of times in a fraction of a second to establish baseline “zero” values for angular rate and gravitational pull.
If the drone is carried, wobbled by the wind, set on an engine-vibrating car hood, or subjected to sudden temperature swings while turning on, the sensor output fluctuates beyond acceptable startup thresholds. The flight controller flags Error 102020 and locks the propulsion system because flying with an uninitialized or miscalculated IMU bias can lead to an immediate flip or roll upon takeoff.

Perform Full 6-Axis IMU
Calibration in Autel Explorer
1. Movement During Startup (The Most Common Cause)
Powering the drone on while holding it in your hands, placing it on a boat deck, or resting it on a running vehicle will disrupt the startup self-test.
- Turn off the drone. Place it on a stable ground surface and power it on. If the error clears, the hardware is fine.
2. Thermal Drift and Environmental Temperature Shock
MEMS sensors are sensitive to rapid temperature shifts. If you bring a warm drone from a heated vehicle directly into freezing winter conditions (or from an air-conditioned room into intense summer heat) and power on immediately:
- The internal silicon expands or contracts rapidly during the boot cycle, causing sensor bias values to drift outside initialization limits.
- Let the drone rest powered off in the ambient environment for 10 to 15 minutes before booting up. For extreme temperature handling, see Drone IMU Temperature Error: Cannot Calibrate at Current Temperature.
3. Initialization Failure After Hard Landing or Crash
A sharp physical shock can knock the IMU’s internal spring-mass structures out of physical alignment or dislodge the silicone vibration-dampening mount holding the flight controller board. Review Drone Sensor Initialization Error After Crash (IMU, Compass, GPS).
Step-by-Step Troubleshooting
Step 1: Execute a Controlled Cold Boot
- Turn off the remote controller and aircraft.
- Remove the battery and inspect the battery bay for foreign debris or unseated connectors.
- Reinsert the battery firmly.
- Place the aircraft on a verified flat, level surface (such as a flat concrete slab or level indoor table).
- Turn on the drone and do not touch the airframe, props, or camera for 30 seconds.
Step 2: Perform a Complete 6-Side IMU Calibration
If Error 102020 recurs even when the drone is kept stationary, the stored baseline calibration values in flash memory have become corrupted:
- Ensure the drone battery has at least 50% charge.
- Launch the Autel Explorer app and link to the aircraft.
- Navigate to Settings -> Flight Control -> Sensor Status -> IMU.
- Tap Calibrate IMU and follow the step-by-step graphic instructions.
- You will be prompted to place the drone into six specific orientations (flat on belly, on its back, right side, left side, nose up, nose down).
- Hold the aircraft completely still in each position until the app sounds a confirmation chime. If calibration fails during this process, refer to Drone IMU Calibration Failed (Universal Master Guide).
Step 3: Check Active Sensor Readings in Autel Explorer
After calibration, open the Sensor Status menu in the app:
- Observe the Gyroscope and Accelerometer bias bars.
- All bars should sit comfortably in the normal (green) zone and remain steady.
- If a bias bar pins itself to maximum or flickers between normal and abnormal while stationary, the internal sensor register is failing. For operational IMU faults, see Autel Error Code 102010 IMU Error.
Step 4: Refresh Aircraft Firmware
Corrupted calibration tables or interrupted firmware updates can permanently corrupt the sensor registers:
- Connect the aircraft to a PC running the Autel PC Tool.
- Re-flash the latest all-in-one firmware package. A clean flash overwrites low-level configuration files and forces the sensor bus to re-enumerate all devices.
Common Misdiagnoses
- Confusing with Compass Initialization Errors: Pilots often assume a navigation lockout is caused by the compass. If the compass is uncalibrated, the app prompts a compass warning; Error 102020 is strictly an inertial sensor failure. If the compass is also affected, consult Autel Navigation System Error Code.
- Confusing with Gimbal Self-Test Failures: A gimbal motor that struggles against a gimbal clamp during boot can vibrate the entire airframe, causing an IMU initialization failure. Always remove the plastic gimbal lock before powering on.
Hard Stops: When to Ground the Aircraft
Cease troubleshooting and send the aircraft for service if:
- Error 102020 displays immediately on every boot, even after a successful 6-axis IMU calibration and firmware refresh.
- The sensor health screen displays
N/A,Unknown, or a constant red warning next to the primary IMU. - The drone suffered a crash, and you hear a physical rattle inside the shell indicating that the IMU dampening module or internal casing is fractured (see Autel Sensor Error After Crash).
