Autel Firmware Update Stuck

An Autel Firmware Update Stuck warning occurs when an EVO series aircraft (including EVO Lite, Nano, EVO II, or Enterprise models) experiences a break in the data transmission pipeline, an SD-card read/write bottleneck, or a subsystem verification mismatch while flashing Autel’s suite of flight processors. Because Autel drones use individual flight controller, optical, and gimbal modules, an interruption leaves the system in a locked, unready state to prevent hazardous control behavior.

Quick Fix

Turn off the aircraft and remote controller, format a high-speed micro-SD card (UHS-I U3 rated) to exFAT, download the clean .bin firmware file directly from Autel’s official support page onto the card’s root directory, insert it into the drone, and perform a clean manual boot update.

How Autel Firmware Updates Work

Autel Robotics uses an integrated multi-system binary package (typically titled AUTEL_FW_...bin or similar model-specific designations).

[ Download .bin Package ] ──> [ Write to SD Card Root ] ──> [ Aircraft Bootloader Reads File ]
                                                                       │
┌─────────────────────────────── Subsystem Flashing ──────────────────┘
├── Main Flight Control (FC)
├── Gimbal Controller (Gimbal Board)
├── Camera Management Unit (CMU)
└── Optical Avoidance / Ultrasonic Core

Unlike platforms that rely heavily on live mobile handshakes, most Autel drones rely on the camera’s micro-SD card to hold and extract the update package. If the SD card fails to write, read, or report correct block sectors, the update freezes.

Primary Causes of Autel Update Freezes

  1. Micro-SD Card Throughput and Format Incompatibilities: Autel bootloaders extract installation payloads directly from the physical storage card. If the card is formatted in NTFS, has corrupted bad blocks, or has slow read speeds, the extraction stops mid-flash.
  2. Autel Explorer App Cache Conflicts: Pushing an Over-The-Air (OTA) update via the Autel Explorer application can fail if your phone or smart controller maintains an incomplete binary file in its cache.
  3. Firmware Mismatch Across System Modules: If an update flashes the flight controller but gets blocked before reaching the camera or gimbal module, Autel hardware displays a permanent version conflict, preventing the aircraft from taking off. If this condition occurs, consult Autel Firmware Mismatch & Compatibility Guide.
  4. Thermal Throttling on Workbenches: Autel EVO series aircraft generate substantial heat when powered on while stationary. Without airflow across the alloy shell or heatsink vents, the internal thermal protection halts memory writes to avoid hardware damage.

Step-by-Step Diagnostic & Recovery Path

Method A: Recovering an Over-The-Air (OTA) App Freeze

If the update froze while updating through a mobile phone or Autel Smart Controller using the Autel Explorer app:

  1. Verify State: If the app has been stuck at the same percentage for 20 minutes, check the drone’s rear arm lights. If they are not blinking rapidly in an active-write pattern, force-close the Autel Explorer app.
  2. Clear App Data: Go to your mobile device’s app management settings, select Autel Explorer, and select Clear Cache and Clear Data.
  3. Charge All Devices: Autel systems will halt if the battery level is below 50% on either the aircraft or the controller. Charge both devices to at least 80%.
  4. Retry with Active Airflow: Power the drone back on with a desk fan pointed at the airframe to prevent thermal pauses, open the Autel Explorer app, and re-attempt the OTA update.

Method B: Manual Offline SD-Card Update (The Most Reliable Method)

If the app continues to stall, switch to the manual SD-card method, which bypasses the wireless connection, phone OS, and app cache.

Step 1: Format SD Card to exFAT on PC/Mac
Step 2: Download official .bin file from Autel Robotics
Step 3: Copy file to SD root (Do not rename the file)
Step 4: Insert card into powered-off drone
Step 5: Power on drone -> Auto-update begins
  1. Take a reliable micro-SD card (16 GB to 64 GB, UHS-I Speed Class 3) and insert it into your computer.
  2. Format the card using the exFAT file system.
  3. Visit the official Autel Robotics download portal and download the latest firmware package for your specific airframe model.
  4. Copy the raw .bin file directly onto the root directory of the micro-SD card. Do not extract the .bin, do not alter the filename, and do not place it inside any folder.
  5. Confirm the aircraft is powered off. Insert the prepared micro-SD card into the drone’s camera card slot.
  6. Power on the remote controller first, then power on the aircraft.
  7. Observe the drone’s status indicators:
    • The camera gimbal will usually go limp.
    • The rear LEDs will flash rapidly or pulse irregularly, indicating that the bootloader is reading the .bin file and flashing internal components.
  8. Leave the drone alone for 20 to 30 minutes. Do not touch the power button, move the airframe, or turn off the controller.
  9. When the rear LEDs return to a slow, steady pulse or normal idle display, the update is complete. Power off the drone, remove the micro-SD card, and delete the .bin file on your computer so it does not trigger an update every time you boot.

Reading Autel Status Indicators During a Stall

Autel uses its rear arm indicators and gimbal LEDs to show internal status during firmware extraction:

  • Fast, Alternating Red and Green: The aircraft is actively writing to flash memory. Do not interrupt.
  • Flashing Red Only: The update package failed the integrity check, or the battery is too low to proceed. Refer to Autel Error Code 20011 Firmware Verification Failed.
  • No Lights / Static Idle Lights for 20+ Minutes: The bootloader failed to read the update file, or the extraction thread has hung. It is now safe to power down and switch to the manual SD card recovery method above.

Hard Stops & Escalation

Stop attempting self-recovery and contact Autel Support or an authorized repair facility if:

  • The aircraft will not initiate the boot process at all (power button lights illuminate, but cooling fans, gimbal, and status lights show no activity).
  • The aircraft flashes a persistent hardware failure alert after an interrupted update, and attempts to re-apply the update via manual SD card fail immediately. For more on recovering from failed updates on Autel hardware, see Autel Firmware Update Failed.
  • The camera module remains completely dead (no video feed, no gimbal stabilization) while the aircraft flight systems connect normally, pointing to an interrupted and corrupted camera management unit (CMU) flash.
