Autel Battery Cell Error

An Autel battery cell error indicates that the Battery Management System (BMS) inside your EVO series battery has detected a serious chemical or electrical fault within one of its internal cells. This warning appears in the Autel Explorer app when an individual cell suffers a severe voltage drop, an unacceptable voltage delta compared to neighboring cells, excessive internal resistance, or physical damage. When this error triggers, the flight controller blocks motor startup on the ground or forces an urgent descent in flight to prevent mid-air power collapse.

Fast Fix

If the aircraft is airborne, ease off the throttle immediately, disable Ludicrous mode, and land at the closest safe site. On the ground, power on the system, navigate to the Battery menu in the Autel Explorer app, and check individual cell voltages. If any cell displays a resting voltage delta exceeding 0.10V, ground the battery pack immediately.

Quick Safety Snapshot

  • Severity: Critical Grounding Hazard
  • Safe to Fly: No. Takeoff is disabled by the flight controller when an active cell error is present.
  • Primary Cause: Internal cell degradation, severe cell voltage imbalance, prolonged storage at 0% or 100%, or chemical damage from high-draw flights.
  • Immediate Action: Land promptly if airborne; isolate the battery in a fire-safe LiPo bag on the ground.

Step-by-Step Inspection & Troubleshooting

1. Check Individual Cell Voltages in Autel Explorer

  • Power on the remote controller and aircraft with the battery installed.
  • Tap the top gear icon, navigate to Battery, and review the individual cell voltage readout.
  • Note the difference (delta) between the highest and lowest cells:
    • 0.01V to 0.03V: Excellent health.
    • 0.04V to 0.08V: Moderate imbalance; requires balance charging.
    • 0.10V or higher: Critical cell failure; pack must be grounded.

2. Perform a Deep Balancing Cycle

If the cell delta is between 0.04V and 0.08V:

  • Connect the battery to the official Autel AC wall charger.
  • Charge until all LEDs turn solid, then leave the pack connected for an additional 2 hours.
  • Insert the pack into the drone, perform a stationary hover at 2 meters outdoors until the battery reaches 15%, then recharge fully.
  • If the delta drops below 0.03V, the pack has recovered.

3. Inspect and Clean Contact Terminals

Dirt, carbon arcing, or oxidation on the multi-pin connector can introduce electrical resistance that corrupts cell telemetry sent to the aircraft:

  • Inspect both the male battery terminals and female aircraft receiver pins.
  • Clean dirty pins using a lint-free swab lightly dampened with 99% isopropyl alcohol.
  • Allow contacts to air-dry completely before reconnecting.

Hard Stops: When to Ground and Retire the Battery

Cease troubleshooting immediately and safely retire the pack if:

  • The cell voltage difference remains at or above 0.10V after two full balance-charge cycles.
  • An individual cell drops below 3.0V during steady hover.
  • The battery casing is swollen, squishy, or separating at the seams.
  • The battery generates excessive heat while sitting idle on the charger or emits a sweet chemical smell.
  • The aircraft experienced an uncommanded power cut or low-voltage landing.

Replacement and Professional Escalation

Autel Intelligent Flight Batteries are sealed units with internal BMS microcontrollers. They cannot be disassembled or repaired with aftermarket cells safely. If a battery continues to trigger cell error warnings after balance charging, retire the pack and replace it with an authentic OEM Autel battery. If multiple brand-new batteries trigger cell errors on the same drone, inspect the aircraft’s internal power pins and core power board for hardware faults.
